One of the relationships that is feeling the effects of this current moment is the conversation around science and religion. Whereas many feel that the word God should sparingly be uttered in a laboratory, and that science is generally distrusted by most churches, there are in fact a group of scientists, philosophers, and theologians who are seeing more connections than reasons for division. Perhaps God and science are meeting in new and surprising ways that could only be possible given how far we've come.
Our world is a bit crazy. But the world we are observing in quantum theory and contemporary cosmology is more spooky, fascinating, and inspiring than it has ever been! Whereas debates between believers and atheists dominated the conversation in the modern world, we think we can move beyond these divisions as well and have the God conversation in a whole new way!
Many of us who were handed a faith tradition and have tried to carry it into the 21st century are at a loss for how to talk about God any more. Of course, with that complication comes all kinds of new doubts, uncertainties, and even bigger questions. The beauty of this cultural moment is that all of these are not cause for concern (having to pick and choose certainty over science or science over faith), but rather cause for conspiring in something new.
It's time to think freshly about perhaps the biggest topic in the history of philosophy and theology: God. Come and join us at Third Window Brewing Co. on August 3rd as we hear from one of the preeminent philosophers of science and religion, Dr. Philip Clayton. Dr. Clayton is a leading voice in this conversation, and will give an accessible introduction to the topic of God and current scientific discovery that will turn into a conversation and Q&R session. He'll share a bit of his story (which includes roots in Santa Barbara as a Westmont grad, leader at FCCSB, etc.), and clue us in to what is happening in the world of science and religion today.
Does God exist?
Is God involved in any way in the fabric of the universe?
If so, what could that even look like in the kind of universe that we observe?
Is God still a ground for religious conviction and hope?
Are these even the right questions to be asking?
We've all got questions. They're all welcome here. We hope you'll grab a beer, pull up a chair, and join us for this night of cheers and conversation. It's always fun to have a drink with a philosopher and chat about life's big questions.
There is limited space at this event, and we do expect it to sell out. This announcement is to Way Co folks first! Grab your ticket today, and we hope to see you there!
